October 24: The Australian War Memorial invites you to an evening with Ross Coulthart. Author of newly released Charles Bean, Coulthart is one of Australia's leading investigative journalists, and reports for Channel Seven's Sunday Night program. He has won a Logie and five Walkley journalism awards including the Gold Walkley. Coulthart is also the author of the bestselling book The Lost Diggers. Like CEW Bean, Coulthart studied law, became a journalist and has covered confl icts in hostile war zones such as East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan. He has always admired Bean's courage and scrupulous honesty, and now he brings his journalist's eye to the real story of the man who was one of Australia's earliest embedded war reporters. 6pm for 6.30pm, drinks on arrival. WORDY WOMEN
October 31: Join authors Kylie Ladd, Maggie Joel and Fiona Higgins, who'll be talking about life, love and books as part of Allen & Unwin's Wordy Women Tour. Organised in conjunction with the ACT Writers' Centre, they'll be speaking in the Ralph Wilson Theatre, Gorman House Arts Centre, 5.30pm for a 6pm start. WRITERS' FESTIVAL
November 7-9: A great line-up for the Snowy Mountains Writers' Festival. Well-known Canberra journalists and authors Chris Uhlmann and Steve Lewis will be guest speakers at the Sunset Festival Dinner and over the weekend you can catch up with Peter FitzSimons (Gallipoli), Karen Viggers (The Grass Castle), Omar Musa (Here Come the Dogs), Biff Ward (In My Mother's Hands), Sulari Gentill (A Murder Unmentioned), Anna George (The Beauty of Stone), David Leser (To Begin to Know – Walking in the Shadows of my Father), poet Victoria McGrath, and others.
